THE first Earth Day, the brainchild of Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, was celebrated across the United States on April 22, 1970. Many people credit that celebration as the unofficial beginning of the modern-day environmental movement.

Millions of individuals, businesses, and government agencies participated in environmental education and activism. Polls indicated a dramatic increase in environmental awareness following the event, which has been held every year since. By 1990, during its 20th anniversary, the event became a worldwide phenomenon for environmental awareness and education.

The Philippines has been actively participating Earth Day activities. In fact, the country has produced a long list of respected environmental heroes. But how are we faring these days? What is the current situation of the country's environment? Let me count the ways.
